I have a three-year-old (at least that old, I got her from someone else) Blue Laced Red Wyandotte who, although done for the year like most of my hens, was a good producer this year. I got a Columbian Wyandotte chick this spring, and Valentina, who laid her first egg about six weeks ago, is still producing at least three eggs every week.
In my opinion, aside from being gorgeous, the other pluses are that Wyandottes are heavy-bodied birds that aren't going to fly off into the adjacent pastures when they are out and about; and while mine aren't cuddly, they can be picked up and moved. They play nicely with other chickens, and my BLRW -- Marietta, who came here with two Cochin Bantam buddies -- actually protected the smaller girls when they first integrated into my flock of full-sized hens.
The reason I added Valentina this year -- aside from her striking good looks -- is because I've had such a good experience with Marietta.
