Wyndotte question.....

I'm thinking of getting a few (3 or 4) bantam black and blue wyndotte pullets and 1 roo come spring. My question is are they good setters ? Compared to bantam cochins, better or not as good? Never had either but, have heard that cochins are good setters. Thanks

Cochins are supposed to be better setters, but I've heard from people on here that their Wyandottes are good, too.

Where are you getting them from?

I've looked everywhere for black bantam hens and can't find them.

Mine were not very good setters, especially when compared to cochins. I had 4 hens, 2 sat (not very good) and the other 2 never went broody.

If you want a setter, get cochins. If you want a friendly bird that lays well for a bantam, get Wyandotte.

Different strains have different qualities. My strain of white bantams never sets but my blr bantam hen started setting in late february and hatched a total of 5 clutches, her last one being about a week ago. My silver laced, dunlaced, dun, and black hens have all gone broody atleast once this year. We also have another blr hen that is always trying to go broody but we wont let her.Our wyandotte bantams are way better broodies then our cochins. But like I said, it all depends on the strain.

Best broody I ever had was a bantam cochin x hen. Second best was a black sexlink. Bantams on the whole are good setters when compared to standard fowl, I think they have to make up for their inability to cover a lot of eggs by setting many different times LOL

The standard breed was developed as a duel purpose bird, so they should not be good setters. However, I have noticed that bantams do not always follow this.

Standard Wyandottes, as a breed , should not make good mommas, always exceptions to the rule, of course, since all chickens breeds come from a root breed that had to be good setters or the species would have become extinct.
