Just had to Google Shamo chickens

They look to be the NBA players of the chicken breeds.

I hang out in the meat bird section mostly, no wonder I haven't seen or heard talk of them. lol

I am not dissing them. They look entertaining to say the least.

I do have a question though. What purpose do they serve, obviously not meat. Are they good layers?

Actually the only reason they APPEAR to be horrible meat birds is because they have hard feathering (feathers firmly against body to outline it) and long legs and necks.

If you regular the Meat Bird section you might notice my post on using them as parents for a meat bird project. They're meatier than any hatchery bird I've felt or butchered and meatier than most other chickens, just not super heavy.

They are a fighting breed, a very ancient one, but I breed them for preservation and love of the breed. They're extremely calm and intelligent birds, very mothering, and also make good meat bird crosses with larger bulkier breeds like imported Sussex.

eta - They're the friendliest and least skittish breed I've known, plus they're very tough and won't take no for an answer when it comes to other chickens.

Are the breast full when you dispatch them?

I do stay away from one thread in the meat bird section that was started way before I joined. I figured since I was late to the game and not experienced I would refrain from that thread.

It's really educational to read though.

I've never butchered a purebred Shamo yet but when I pick them up and compare them to all my other breeds, their breasts are fuller indeed. The Sussex come next, which is why I'm pairing the two. Also, Sussex are huge when from European lines, and very horizontal, which is what I want to breed in. The ideal outcome will be slightly upright and like Shamos, very wide. Much like a good show quality Cornish. (the real ones

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - Shamos are a very wide breed. Many Asils are meatier than them indeed but most Shamos I find are more attractive.
