Well...so how are the new hens???? Did you get a lot? What kind are there???? Mine seem to be adjusting well. Wish it was cooler for them. We are building a covered area in their run this weekend so they will have more shade. 4th weekend in a row of chicken projects! lol

Bummer! Are you still looking for some? I will keep my eyes out. Not sure what is going on with my girls, I think it is the heat...I only ended up with 2 eggs yesterday. I usually get about 6-8. We did build them a covered area just off their coop...much like a covered patio. They love it. We also installed a fan in the coop to help pull some hot air out.

How do you combat flies? I have three of the fly trap things hung up in their yard, but it seems like in the past few days the fly population has just exploded...I am sure this is due to the heat we are having. Do you have any issues with them?

i only have a fly prob if i dump to much left overs on the ground?

I have been good about feeding left overs in a dish and then taking it away when they are done. But I did leave hunk of watermelon down there yesterday for most of the day. So ready for some cooler days. I have collected three eggs today and another hen is in the box now. Can't wait for the new babies to start laying!

No, I don't have a rooster and I don't really want one. I have only the pullets and the older hens from the original flock.

This morning one of the older hens was dead in the coop. I couldn't find any signs of trauma to her, it looks like she just died in the night. Sad because she was a regular layer. I have about 4-5 older ones that I call freeloaders because they don't lay eggs anymore. I would really like to cull them out and have them in my freezer, but I am not sure I can do it. I am still looking around for someone whom I could pay in trade with meat or eggs.

What breed are the eggs that you have?

i ate my roosters,

the eggs i got coming are Japanese Bantam

i want blue chickens (don't know why) and some of these should be blue!

i have not got an egg in 3 weeks!! but i just started them free ranging and they may be laying them on the ground?
