X-Large & Jumbo eggs. Exactly how big are they? What R these whoppers?

One of my EE hens (all medium sized hens) laid this MONSTER today! It is 3-7/8 ounces! This one happens to double yolked, most we get that are this large or close to it are single yolk.

Very pretty egg! I'd be tempted to blow that one out and save it. I had a pretty one in a nest in a floral wreath on my wall but the kids busted it recently.

How do you know it's double yoked? Did you crack it or candle it? I can't candle my dark or blue eggs. I can only see well in the lighter eggs. I need to get a good candler, but I don't have $60.00 to spend on one!

Out of the chickens you list you have in large fowl. I think the langshan or cochin would be the most likly canidates for those eggs. These are both good size breeds that can easily lay very large eggs.

Surprisingly, my Cochin eggs aren't that large. The birds are but not the eggs. They look just like the barred rocks and RIR's, but are lighter.

Maybe the Langshan, although I never can catch her laying. The BSL lays a big one but it's usually speckled. I'll just see what hatches out and MAYBE I'll be able to figure it out, lol!

I read about how some people on here use those nursery monitors with the camera in their coops. I think that's a great idea! You could catch your girls 'in the act.' I'd like to know who lays what too!

I candled it and the two yolks were pretty obvious in this one. We just put a new bulb (the right kind) in our flashlight after having to use a dimmer one when the original broke and I can see in the eggs again, even in a dimly lit instead of totally dark room! I use a HUGE mag-lite and have great luck with it. I just have to be careful because it can get hot if I let an egg get too close for too long.

I'll have to take a look at the maglites then. I'll add one to my list of hand tools and cordless power tools I want, lol!

They are pretty expensive (especially the bigger ones) but SO worth it. I think they may have smaller models that I have heard work pretty well, but I would not trade this big black monster for anything!
