Well, the survivor died today. =(
I pulled him out at 9AM to feed him and he was making awful noises. He'd open his mouth real wide, his jaw would quiver, then he would scream. He was also chilly (about 30 degrees colder today than originally forecast, and we'd turned our furnace off).
I decided it would be better to get him warm than to get him fed (which would require chilling him). So I put the heating pad back under his nest and let him be.
Checked on him at noon and 5, and both times he was still a little cool, despite the nest being toasty, but he was sleeping well. At 5, he seemed to have a little more vigor in his "leave me alone I'm sleeping", but was also making some noises again, so I let him be.
When I decided it had been long enough and he needed to eat, he was dead. He didn't look emaciated, still had a well-rounded belly, so I don't think it was hunger. I don't know what got him.
