I am new to chickens as well and I did everything I could to make the run as safe from predators as possible without totally breaking the bank. My coop will be closed up at night but I would like to someday just leave the door open for the girls. I put in chicken wire, which everyone says predators will rip through, so on the bottom 4 feet of my run I added 2x4 welded wire buried about a foot or so deep. I have never seen a raccoon in our yard but I am sure once they get the smell of chickens they will be around. We do have panthers in our area but I don't think they will bother us because there is easier prey around us.

So anyway to answer your question, yes I would put a door on your coop and lock them up at night, unless you are certain your run is safe from predators.
