Thanks. It doesn't benefit the yak or me if they cannot live in a more damp clime such as western Oregon. I did notice quite a few breeders in CA which I found odd given the heat and very little snow in the areas they keep their yak. One breeder is in an area I used to live in for 11 years and they are NOT up in the mountainous areas that get a lot of snow, maybe an occasional snow shower, just we like we get here but its horribly hot in the summertime even under masses of trees and of course, very dry (tinder dry). I've written to them, asking how their yak fare in that area and awaiting reply.

Thanks again.

This thread just made me want yak...

*SQUEE* Okay, okay, I may love yaks....just a bit. Maybe I love them so much that my husband took me to see some on a fiber farm for a gift....and just maybe that was the best gift ever. Full-blooded, or hybrids, I love them all from their horsey little tails to their horns. Royals make me melt into a puddle of joyous goo. I would like a herd when we have some land because they can be more sustainable than cattle, but I then doubt I could butcher and eat them. So it'll probably end up just being a pair of royals for some pack yaks. I already have names picked out. Yakkesoba and YakkityYak. ...Did I mention I like yaks?

Anyone know how yak would fare in NE. IL (and by northern I mean I can see the WI border from my house). If anyone could pm me with yak feed and land requirements that would be fabulous! I apologize for digging the thread up :)

I have given up dream about having yak. Can't afford to move from western OR to colder, snowier climates (which I love, like central OR) so have to stay wtih the poor cousins, Scottish Highland cattle. sigh.

Ohmygiggles that is the CUTEST picture :O

I don't know of any Yak breeders around the SoCal area...probably too HOT!
However, we do have a Camel farm nearby and I'd consider getting some for the milk...supposed to be excellent health-wise.

In the mean time, we keep Oberhasli dairy goats.
