Yak *Herd Pics pg 5*

It will snow here a tiny bit but not very much. In fact, 2004, it snowed heavily enough to stick around for 3 whole days and was about 6 inches deep. We are at 350 ft. elevation

Do you prefer the Oberhasli to Nubian for goat's milk? why? (learning here)

We have a lot of acreage so the Nubian size is no problem. I also have very large dogs so am used to bigger. Oh, also draft horses. But I was wondering other than size and noise, do you find any differences in their milk? Our Nubians have a super high cream content and its one of the best goat milks I've ever tasted!

Some people don't like noisy animals so, if that doesn't bother you then go for it. I can't remember what the butterfat levels were on my last doe on milk test but she was #3 in the US for butterfat and her milk tasted like whipped cream to us. Every doe is different but I do find that if they've been bred before a year their butterfat seems to be lower than what it could have been.

I haven't tasted Nubian milk so I can't comment on taste. Our Ober's milk is sweet and we make ice cream with it as well as other dairy. Taste can also be in the processing methods as well.
Milk stone build up on the bucket, not sanitizing thoroughly and quick chilling can make a huge difference in flavor as well.

One more thing, I know that Oberhasli have a great will to milk and are a dream on the milk stand...but you might want to check into Nubian temperament.

Sounds like dream goats! Yes, our two Nubian does are first time moms, one's had her babies weaned since late April and she is giving about 2 gallons a day and the other we just weaned the kids off her and she isn't producing as much but she also does not like being milked. The other one is a doll to milk.

Other than being larger, their temperaments are pretty stable, solid and their milk is pretty sweet as well. Do you feed molasses? We were told to give them a bucket of molasses. Is that for iron content? They kept tipping this bucket over so we stopped giving it to them.

Only feed molasses after giving birth for a quick pick me up.

I don't give molasses daily as an overdose can cause molasses toxicity, molasses, drunkenness or stargazing, affecting the nervous system. (ask me how I know)

Goats are like people...they all have different personalities. Consider yourself fortunate if you get a great milker who is also well behaved.

We add Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar to the water with a carabiner attached to the fence to prevent tipping.
