I live in coastal Georgia and although the temperature is warmer than usual for this time of year, our three week old chicks are still in the brooder - naturally. However, the other day, warm as it was, I put them outside in a little make-shift coop. I stayed with them and observed how they reacted. I think they did really well.
The "runt" (Dumpling) is always the first to try something so she was the first to explore. The rest of the girls finally started exploring their new digs and soon they were scratching, posturing and chasing each other, especially when one found a piece of wood that resembled a worm.
The one odd thing that I observed was "yawning." One of the girls seemed like she was gulping air. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Anyway, when they got back to their brooder they huddled under the heat lamp and slept for the entire night. Gotta love chicks!
