Yawning?

Do chickens yawn? It sounds like a silly question but when I get angry I go hang out with my chickens to calm me down and I went out there tonight and I was holding one and she opened her mouth really wide for about 3 seconds and then closed it. Also, do chickens normally have warm feet? Especially on hot days like today (high 80's).

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Mine do that also sometimes, think it is a reaction to stress / pressure we are putting on their chest when we are holding them. As long as they don't do it excessively otherwise to make me think of gapeworm, I don't worry about it. A chickens normal body temp range is warmer than ours, up to around 105-107 if I remember right, so they are usually warm feeling to us, including their feet.

Mine do this too. I am not sure if it is truly yawning or not. Mine will yawn when airplanes fly over, rumbling noises like lawn mowers or tractors, sometimes after preening I think a feather can get stuck in their pipes, etc...

Yes, chickens feet are warm. The best way to check a chickens feet is compare one foot to the other. Both feet should be either warm or cool. Not one cool and one hot. If one is hot, then there is something wrong. Both hot, then things are probably as they should be.

I have 3 buff Orpingtons, a rooster a hen with almost with diarrhea who is laying eggs daily (just one), & a six week old buff. I also have two Banties about 5 week s old.

Have you wormed your birds recently? Lots of diarrhea can be a sign of worms. If the worms get bad enough it can kill the birds. The birds will get very thin, pale combs, stop laying and become lethargic. Worms eat the food in the intestines that the birds are eating. Worms can clog up the intestines as well.

Welcome to BYC. Chickens sneeze sometimes too - usually if confronted with powders. If they continue to sneeze during day after day. That is something to ask about.
