ok so im getting one peking duckling saturday and i know some stuff but i need all the things from the experts on here this will be my first duckling so i know they need a brooder but please tell me how to raise the ducky thankyou sooooo much

please im sooooo desperate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was gonna get two but my friend said not ot because they would get attached on eachother and not me and they wouldnt come near me what do you think

I raised eleven, and three of them come up to me every time I see them, asking for pets. Another three like pets sometimes, and all of them are happy to be nearby.

It depends in part on the duck's personality, which we cannot control, but it depends ALOT on how much time you spend with them and how much you spoil them, and how sweet you are with them.

And, of course, bribes. Gotta give them bribes, like peas (not too many, not too soon - read the sticky).

okay so now im getting two pekin ducklings lol tell me stuuf i need to get them sterted

I am so Glad you decided on two I Have a Pair of Pekings and the Male is very very Tooo Friendly with me .. won't let me walk with out circling around my Legs ! Baby Ducks are like baby Chicks in the Beginning they need a starter food . A Heat Lamp if they are young.. Plenty of fresh water .. They enjoy swim in kiddie pools when they are little. I even took mine to the crick after a couple weeks to let them act like big ducks .. If you plan on keeping them enclosed they will need a good water supply they can dip in .. Some people use Small pools. I Actually keep a kids Winter plastic sled in my yard year round.. I fill it like a water trough in the AMS for every one to get a quick drink by mid day usually my Ducks jump in and muck it up . My Ducks are Free Range so they have access to several waterers and a crick behind our house. . But as Babies they will need to be protected and kept warm . I Made a Play pen out side for mine when they were little on nice days so they could play as they grew and get used to the elements ..

Just off the top of my head (please read that link!!)

Brooder - safe place, no dogs, cats, clumsy humans, things that can fall over or catch fire, brooder needs to be warm enough (generally, 90F the first week, dropping 5 degrees a week until they are at room temperature). Watering station that will provide water and will not soak the brooder quickly. Look around the forum to see ideas... This will matter more than you may imagine. Do this right, and you will not be regretting your decision, or facing eviction, within three days!!!! Brooder needs to be where there is fresh warm air, no drafts. No chance for ducklings to fall or get stuck. Preferably where you can hear them. Don't ignore sounds of distress. Check on them every time.

Water - need it 24/7 for probably ten weeks. Clean & refresh as many times a day as you can stand it (thinking at least 3 at first)

Food - if chick starter, nonmedicated (unless you are okay with amprolium, that is a personal choice), with extra niacin from capsule or a sprinkle of brewer's yeast on each bowl of food.

Bedding - several choices, but make sure they don't eat it!!!! Give it the sniff test before you use it. If it is dusty, get them out of the brooder while you clean and fix up the bedding. Must be no-skid, to avoid splay leg.

Have on hand antibiotic ointment, bandages, vitamins-electrolytes-probiotics. Search the forum to see more details.

If you make changes, hang around for at least 20 minutes after to make sure the ducklings won't get themselves into trouble with the changes. (new waterer, bedding, rearranging things)

Now your turn . . . what do you have ready? Is the brooder all set up and ready to go? All supplies near at hand? Do you have a thermometer so you can be sure the brooder is warm enough? Who is your backup if you cannot be there?

  1. ok so i have a large brooder tht i raised fifty chicks in i have the heat lamp i have bedding i have a feeder all i need is the duck food and the waterer im gonna make one though from some pics oive seen on byc :) o and the duckies
  2. what do you think i was thinking about getting a seperatge brooder for the two duckies bc i still have ten chicks in the brooder what do you think
  3. and also and also what tiops do have for a cleaner brooder

I would brood them separately, or at least divide the brooder because I have heard of conflicts due to water issues and size.

For a cleaner brooder . . . . manage the water!!!! So, how are you going to reduce splash and wet bedding? I found that wet bedding dropped the temperature 10 degrees!!!!!
