Yay! My crested gecko is eating!

FYI for those talking Leopard Geckos and do not know how to care for a Crested Gecko, Cresties do NOT eat insects for the majority of their diet. Cresties are frugivores. Their diet should consist of fruit based foods. And since humans can't replicate what is found on New Caledonia, they need to be fed something like Clark's Crested Gecko diet or Repashy's Crested Gecko diet, these are two popular and widely available diets. Human fruit baby food does not cut it for their nutritional needs, but can be used for extremely short periods of time in desperation.

It is definitely exciting when a new animal finally feels comfortable enough to eat. They often just need some peace and quiet to settle in. I always put a very thinly spread amount of food for newbies, so I could better observe if any was consumed. Sometimes a new home means a new diet, and it takes some hunger and curiosity for them to try the new stuff.

You can often supplement a cresty's diet with insects for "fun" or stimulation but it shouldn't be the main staple of food. Quite honestly, I don't know why anyone would want to feed crickets anyway. They are stinky and loud and it's such a pain to go to the store all the time and buy them! I would hesitate to feed live meal worms to any critter that doesn't chew. Then again, insects should not be the main diet for any reptile, unless they are dusted and properly gut loaded!

The bigger issue, I think, is finding a good food for cresties. The ones in the pet store are often not very good. The ones listed in Stacy's post are good ones. I have a hard time finding repashy these days though. I think someone else might have taken over the company (I ordered last about six months ago)

ETA: Amazon sells a 12oz bag of repashy for $19 but Pangea is the other brand. They only sell 1/2 pound bags, but I find both companies/foods to be complete and very good, though my cresty likes the Pangea better because it is more fruity. I keep any extra in the freezer.

I have and have had both tropical and desert geckos. They are just great.
