Yay! Our design for our first coop!!! But, is it ok?

You know, adding a hinged, flap type of "awning" will take very little extra time, and will not only make you feel better if/when temps. drop a bit in the winter (just for overnight most likely), but are great for storms and such, to keep rain from gusting inside and getting your bedding all wet.

ETA: We built some that we put up for spring/summer to keep rain and the sun's HOT rays out....

Yes, I think we are going to do something like this. You are right that it will set my mind at ease. Even though I could probably get by with a pretty open coop in my area, we do get really strong East Winds in the fall and as far as winter goes, it doesn't get too cold too often, but when it does and the rain is coming down, I don't want to worry about the chickens being cold and/or wet.

Thank you!

I'm in humid lower Alabama. Heat is our big concern. I have a similar design, but my roof has a 1 foot slant over a 4 foot distance. The back (low) side has six inches of vent and the front (high) side has 1.5 feet of vent. Both sides are vented at a slant for the 4 foot width. I used 1 foot of overhang on front and back and 8 inches on either side. It has stayed dry in heavy rains and cool with temps in the high 80s so far. It does sit in the shade - which helps. Heat rises - so venting at the top is most effective.
