YEAH! No more frozen water in a coop without electricity!

Well I'm sure this may be old news to many but to me who is new to chicken care this year I was so pleased to figure out a way to keep my chickens' water from freezing WITHOUT having electricity out to their coop.

I filled a hot water bottle with near-boiling water and placed it inside their waterer in the evening. Even when it froze outside their water was fine. Here in the northwest we don't have to worry about it freezing in the day so it is only necessary at night.

YEAH! Happy chickens again...

Wow. That's a great idea! I was bringing in the waterer at night and filling it with warm water in the morning to get them through the day..but some days I would have to go out and break the ice.

I just ran an extension cord out to my coop for power. Actually it is like two or three extension cords together lol.

I tried it when we got real cold, which here is hovering right around 26 F. I was so relieved to find a way to keep the wate from freezing without electricity since DH would never allow me to bring out a cord, way too MR Safety, but in a smart and good way...mostly...
