so...i am so excited. i have told a few people, but they are not as excited as i am - thus, i am posting on here!

i was not home all day yesterday, went out at 6:45am and chix were still roosting. saw 1 good size brown egg and one white egg. i have 7 brown egg layers and 1 white layer. both shells were sooo thin. the white one was popped and flat. but the brown in tact. they were in the roost though and not in the next boxes...

i have been giving oyster shells. they don't eat a lot of them.
anything else to help harden the shells?

How egg-citing! My eggs have actually been harder to crack than the store bought eggs. Perhaps it is because they are smaller.

Congrats!!! I had some soft shelled ones in the beginning. They'll get it right.

Hooray for you!

I got my first one today also. It is a soft shell, on the droppings board. I also give free choice oyster shell. I was advised that it may help to take some of oyster shell "flour" and sprinkle it in their food. That is what I am gonna do. Also was told... Do you have any cod liver oil, or another ADE oil that you can put on their food? Cod liver oil sprayed on the food twice a week, or "fortified" (with A,D,E) wheat germ oil can help the D part of the calcium.

Again, congrats! How old are your chickens? What kind?

Nothing more magical than first eggs- enjoy the many more to come!!
