Yeast infection in my chicken's mouth?

i found that Listerine works well, too. I had a hen with a mouth that looked like thrush a while back. Didn't have Vetrycin at the time (and wouldn't have known to use it until i read this thread), so we used q-tips to clean out as much of the muck as we could, then dipped clean q-tips in the Listerine and dabbed all over in the mouth and as far down the throat as we dared. It cleaned up pretty fast, within a couple of days.

really? now thats a bit less expensive than vetrycin, but i had vetrycin on hand, so when you were cleaning it out, did your hen have alot of mucous as it healed?

You know, I don't recall there being an excess of mucous at all. It was like everything cleared up with no problems. Never had another issue with her since.

I did use the old fashioned Listerine, not the new, alcohol-free stuff. I hope you don't have any other issues with it, but if you do, try the Listerine. It really worked well for me. It also works on Athlete's foot (same basic indication, really). *That* lesson quickly followed the "I'll never have a pedicure at a commercial establishment ever again" one.

well, his 'stuff' is almost gone, but i think i'm going to get some listerine to have on hand too,its so deep in there, he is arguing about me messing with it, this is the first day he has shown that, he also is eating better-

do you have someone to hold him and pry his beak open? that was very helpful for me.

put some Listerine in a small ramekin or tiny bowl, because what you don't use you'll need to throw out. pour a little at a time, you can always add more from the bottle (but you don't want to put the unused back into the bottle).

i used q-tips soaked well. i would start in the back and work forward, you will use a LOT of q-tips, keep using fresh ones when they get gunky. don't be afraid to apply some pressure. always pull the stuff to the front, roll your q-tip. of course, when you see blood, try not to go over that area again for a day or so, if you can. Listerine can get painful on open sores.

glad to hear he's eating better and becoming fussy. :) A crying baby is a good thing (old EMT thing).

actually i pull on his wattles and he opens his mouth, then i wipe as much as i can out- from a solid mass, now i am down to about a 1 x 1/4 inch strip- the other concern is how to build him up after this, he is pretty thin

what a great idea, pulling his wattles. makes perfect sense.

i've been told that adding cooked egg yolk, cottage cheese and lots of fresh veggies help build babies. of course i am using vitamins/electrolytes and probios in the water and watering the medicated chick feed, grinding it all up together and making it available. i would check the other forums for other ideas, seems to me that whatever you can get them to eat, let them eat it. I give all my left overs to the chickens and goats (short of the known toxins). Even leftover meat (pieces of leftover hamburger if you have it), lots of protein. Add fat, too. Maybe a little bit of olive oil in his feed or over a little scratch.

it sounds like you're making decent progress.

today i think he had his food in his dish every time i looked in on him, i started giving him some outside time yesterday and today, and what a difference- he could see the flock and he really perked up- i can't get to the area its still on in his throat, so he is getting his throat sprayed, the mucous also has cleared up- here is captain-

Very glad he is making progress!
He's a very pretty roo, too.
