Hi everyone. My 18 week old RSL has developed a yellow cyst on one of it's eyes. I have noticed that he has been sitting with his eyes closed a lot today as if he is sleeping. Otherwise, he seems to be eating fine. I have attached a photo. Please let me know if you know what this could be. I don't know what to do.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I've never seen this before so I did some research. The closest thing I could find is below. I hope he doesn't have this but it's a start.I know that Georgia has had a lot of rain lately. Did the litter get wet? With so much rain it hard to avoid.

If you have any contact lens storage solution I would gently drop some onto the eye or soak a cotton ball and gently lay it in the eye. It might foam but that's normal because contact lens solution has peroxide in it. Don't use straight peroxide. The contact lens solution will sooth the eye and kill germs.

Your state agricultural department might be able to provide some information.

Best of luck.

Fungal Infections

Molds readily grow on a number of different materials, including poultry feed and litter. A common mold is Aspergillus . Birds can be exposed to Aspergillus or other fungi in the hatchery, or more commonly in poorly dried litter. While Aspergillus is usually considered a respiratory tract pathogen, it can also invade the brain and eye. Yellow plaques develop and can be found under the eyelid. The eye becomes inflamed and severe damage can occur.

Thank you for your reply. I had also sent an e-mail to someone that I know personally that raises chickens and she had not seen it either. I'm a little worried and not sure if it is worth a trip to a vet or if it is something that can be spread. I have been trying to keep the coop as clean as possible. Of course my coop has a lot of ventilation because of the heat here, so when it rains, it does get wet inside, but dries out rather quickly.
