So Blackie our Ayam has been hiding in the bushes alot lately with her 2 month old chick, she kinda does this anyway. Well today I finally got her close enough to peek at her and her eye looks injured. Infection? Is she blind? She didn't make it easy to catch her. What can I do?

Update: took her to a vet but they have never seen this. They didn't think it was Coryza but a possible peck or scratch that got infected.

Did the vet recommend anything? Antibiotics? Antibiotic ointment or eye drops?

He gave me terramycin eye drops for her and is consulting a colleague avian ophthalmologist. No clear answers yet.

I googled it but not much out there. I don't know if anyone else has seen this or had this happen. I want to help her as quick as possible.

Did the vet remove the pus from the eye? If not, then you need to press that out or the eye won't heal.

There is no pus around the eye it’s actually in the eye ball it’s self. The vet said if I press her eye the eye ball could burst from the pressure. I really don’t want to rupture her eye if possible.

Ah I see. Well if that's the eye ball it's self, did the vet suggest removing it? That may be better.

It does look like the yellow is inside the eye. She is most like ly blind from an injury. I would use the ointment to lubricate her eye and prevent infection, but I doubt that anything could be done to restore it. Sorry about your hen.

He has not yet got back to me. Waiting to hear what to do next.

Thank you, I was afraid she would be permanently blind. She seems to be doing ok with only 1 eye so I think if I can get rid of the infection she will be alright. She is a good momma and has a 2 month old chick she is still taking care of. They are together ❤ all the time.

I wish I would have caught it sooner.

I doubt if you could have done anything once her eye was injured. Sometimes they will be pecked in the eye, and suffer swelling and eye drainage. I haven’t seen an eye like this before. It might even be something internal that caused her eye to be like this. I have seen two of my dogs over the years have a red eye that was from an internal hemorrhage. Let us know how she gets along.
