Hi So this duck egg is overdue and still alive. yesterday I mistakenly thought it had pipped internally so I decided to assist. When I opened it up, the membrane was still intact so I followed a suggestion to place clear tape over the hole. the bottom of the taped egg’s shell is turning yellow, could this be bacterial? the bird inside is still alive but separated from the other eggs.

on the bottom of the aircell on the inside it looks like the membrane is growing up on the shell or maybe the yolk is leaking??? the duckling is still moving but I don't know if he'll make it...

The splotch/mark can be from the duck/chick/etc trying to pip in one spot and failing to get through. If the yellow mark just appeared it's likely he's been trying for a while. If he's pipped internally (breathing air) you can open a small hole for his bill and leave him be.
Odds could be a bit low as malpositions/weak pips can often be the result of the baby having something else wrong. Just keep the membrane moist and see if he zips now that he has some airflow and an opening. Hope your little guy makes it!

I'll also tag @Isaac 0

Also make sure to stay away from that massive vein near his bill if you make a small breathing hole. If you nick that he could bleed out.

THANK YOU this is really helpful I am/was so worried!

he hasn't pipped at all from what I can see and I can't even see his beak from that hole but I'll wet his membrane rn and see what's going on

Just remove the tape, and keep waiting. I'm sorry, I haven't been on much today. I have been insanely busy.
The yellow could be bruising, or it could be drying out a bit, but I wouldn't worry about the discoloration right now.

Hi all, just wanted to give an update for anyone experiencing a similar issue who stumbles on this.

Unfortunately this chick did pass. It was malpositioned in a really weird way where it's head was at its feet but its neck was twisted so bottom jaw faced out. It appears the cause of death was pipping in to its embryonic waste and/or yolk. Sadly when I took it out to moisten the membrane I heard it gurgle and presumably aspirate on the waste. fortunately it didn't suffer long and took a few breaths and was out. It was definitely gonna die anyways but I can rest easy knowing I did everything I could. Hope that comforts anyone experiencing a similar malposition!

This is getting really weird. This is the 3rd post I've seen in 2 weeks about babies pipping through their own yolk sacs.

I'm so sorry you lost this one. May I ask which brand of incubator you're using? I want to know if it's the same as the other 2 cases.

yes that one was in a little giant incubator the forced air one with digital display. I used two thermometer/hygrometers (calibrated) but still it seems all eggs on the right side of my LG were malpositioned

It sounds like it wasn't turning the right side. The other 2 cases were turning failures too.

Though with the others it was the brinsea 360s having turner issues. I hope your future hatches go well. Again, so sorry for your troubles. :hugs
