Fashion died tonight. She was fine this morning. She had started laying again but didn't the past two days. She didn't act egg bound or like anything was wrong with her until tonight. I'm guessing there was more going on than I thought and she hid it well. I am grateful that the worst of it that she was unable to hide, didn't last long. She will be greatly missed as our amazing and incredibly efficient head hen. If it wasn't Friday night, I'd plan on having a necropsy done but the dr at my closest lab isn't too accepting of carcasses unless it's that day

Good morning @Eggcessive . I've been up all night reading about basics of different ailments and diseases. With my minimal experience and reading, I feel like it's a strong possibility that Fashion suffered from fatty liver disease. After seeing Fashion pass these concerning poops about a month ago, me treating her with antibiotics, and thinking she recovered with regular egg laying and her normal behavior only to die about a month later suddenly, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the possibility of this looking like fatty liver. Of course I understand there is no way to know 100% without a necropsy, I'm still very curious and nervous. Out of the blue, my 9 year old daughter mentioned that she thought Fashion was overweight. She didn't feel extremely overweight but she didn't feel as trim as a pullet either. Her abdomen and crop did appear to sway a bit if she was running. Her flockmate/Hatchery mate Izzy, another SLW, seems to have an almost identical body. If you think it's possible that this could have been fatty liver, is there a way to help Izzy if she's headed down the same route? Their diet has vastly improved as hens. I really overdid the treats whenever they were pullets, but things are completely different now. Other than cutting out any and all treats, is there a certain food to help combat weight issues? I'm reevaluating the amount of free ranging time because I know that will help, no matter what. Thank you for your time

Sorry that you lost Fashion. I started doing necropsies on my hens that died several years ago. The yellow poops can be a sign of infection in the reproductive tract. If the urates are yellow, that points to a liver issue. Liver disease that causes ascites can be from egg yolk peritonitis, liver cancer, fatty liver henorragic disease, or heart failure. If you open the abdominal wall and yellow or amber fluid comes out, that would diagnose ascites. But the root cause could be any of the diseases above. One hen I had died of fatty liver, because I saw ascites fluid, a tan liver, and a large blood clot uder the liver. It’s good that you are aware that feeding too many treats and overweight hens can be causes of fatty liver. I don’t know of any treatments, and you just never know until you can look at the organs. Hopefully, Izzy will live a long time.
