Hi,
My wife and I are just starting out on our chicken adventures at our suburban home near Baltimore. Always open to suggestions. So, on to the template questions:
Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are looking to purchase our first set this year. As you can imagine, we have nothing and know even less.
How many chickens do you have right now?
Nothing yet, but we are looking to have 4 chickens in our first flock.
What breeds do you have?
Since we are in a suburban neighborhood, we are looking for easy going, family friendly birds. we're considering Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Orpington and Australorp.
What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We are heavy egg eaters and want to provide our own rather than buying from the store.
Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a family of 5, with the kids all being teenagers. We have two labs and two cats. My biggest concern is the dogs harming the chickens if we decide to free range. We live on a one acre lot, so our enclosed backyard is about 2/3rds of an acre. I am considering building a 4X4 coop and an 8X4 run.
