Yet another cautionary tale --

The sad part of human nature is that we judge ourselves so much harder then others judge us, and we don't forgive ourselves so easy. I sure hope you can make peace with yourself as there is no way you would of every done anything to hurt those babies. I am so sorry for your loss. Bless you for taking on the burden of Harry, I believe we all have a Harry in our life and those Harry's make us stronger for taking them on. Hang in there.

I am so very sorry to hear that your dog killed all of your confined birds. I pray that no one comes along and tells you how irresponsible you were to have a dog that you knew would kill them and a coop that you knew was faulty but failed to fix - as you have told so many others. I guess you can add those 14 violent deaths to the poll you conducted a few days ago. Best I can tell, you have 14 out of 14 cooped birds dead almost from the get-go. I have 3 out of 60 free ranging birds dead over a two year time. I like my stats better. Again, so very sorry for your birds. What a horrible tragic death with no means of escape. But in the lessons learned maybe there will be one of compassion toward others in their time of grief now that you've experienced it.

Ruth -- thanks for your input, but I haven't said any such thing. Fortunately, I am not responsible for what you might *imagine* that I have said.

I did say to somebody else in a similar situation to mine:

"I dread the thought of this happening at my place! I have a herd of large, fast dogs with high prey drives, and disaster could strike at any time."

and to another person I said:

"Hey -- no judgments or sarcasm in this forum, remember?

So the OP made a mistake. Well, guess what -- we all do dumb things from time to time. How about helping her prevent the same thing from happening again, instead of judging her for being human??"

Oh, and btw -- when you say you've only lost 3 birds, you seem to be forgetting the 6 ducks that your own dog killed back in May. That thread is right here on this forum, remember?

At that time I told you: "I know you're upset about the birds. But don't foist the problem off on someone else, or hide behind vague platitudes about the evils of fencing. Take responsibility for keeping your animal family safe."

I'm not ashamed to admit my own mistakes. How about you?
