Yet Another CDC Warning

To everyone talking about an apparent high school science experiment that proved hand sanitizer isn’t effective because something appeared on the skin under a UV blacklight after a second application... you realize that was most likely residue from the sanitizer, not germs... right?

Wow, this post took a left turn somewhere.

There are no "Germ X-rays", even use of a medical Xray tends to be highly restricted, particularly where (I assume) a high school student is proposing radiating a human being - nor do they provide the magnification needed to see a germ - and you can't stick your hand in a scanning electron microscope. Black lights only reveal things that flouresce under the portion of the UV spectrum that bulb radiates. Most germs don't. They are often treated with other substances to make them more visible (i.e. Gram-positive testing)

I'd be very curious as to the structure of the experiment, and why that conclusion was drawn - it doesn't seem to fit the evidence. Poor experimental design, and likely cross contamination seem more probable hypothesis for the purported outcome.

Agree - poor test design. Conclusion drawn implies ignorance of numerous factors. Hope it didn't win the science faire.

I didnt...
You are still young. I applaud your willingness to put your opinion out there, and in print. It takes courage.

Perhaps best to avoid dispensing medical advice for the time being.

Hope your science teachers are better qualified in the future, or at least have more time to devote to guiding you in the early stages of project development.

Oh you noticed? I'm normally a very open to my feelings and opinions 🙃!

Say what you will about the CDC but after the past year and a half, my confidence in them has plummeted. I don't need a federal agency to tell me common sense things like washing your hands and don't kiss your chickens. Mass hysteria sells
