Yet another predator attack, supersized!

Quote:
I was still a safe distance away. They don't have real great eyesight but usually when they hear or smell a person they run. I guess satisfying it's hunger was the more important issue at hand.

No beings can actually be replaced, humans or otherwise - all are one of a kind unique beings that want to live just as much as the rest of us. Chickens included.
That said, I'm not suggesting it was safe to walk towards the bear, though I have done it without repercussions. Unless they're protecting their young, they can usually be chased off.
I'm so glad that nobody got hurt.
Now you'll really need Fort Knox, because he or she will be back. In early spring food sources are scarce and that is one hungry bear.
Hoping all will be well.

Well, here we go again. I already was outside checking the area with the spotlight after the dogs started barking. I heard a loud crash in the woods behind my coop, probably just deer but this darn bear is turning me paranoid now. I spent over three hours today trying to repair some of the damage from last night. One coop is more secure then it originally was, the other is probably less secure in the area of the pop door for the birds but it was the best I could do today.

i cant believe what it did to your coop! Fav you need to be careful....nothing more dangerous than a mother bear with her cubs...or spring bear thats hungry...

you need to make sure the food bins are picked up and the eggs all collected before you go to bed...

Glad you are ok!!!

It might not look good, but I would drive a bunch of nails from the inside of that coop to the outside. It might not stop the bear, but his paws would be sore.

You need to install an electric fence, and make sure you wet down the ground just before sunset.

Beware, when they can't get full on what is in the hen house and barn, they will be working on the doors to your house. Hopefully, they open out, because bears always seem to want to push them in.

Don't feed your dogs and cats outside. Don't put out bird feeders. Be careful about leaving garbage out.

Plant flowers that they don't like, narcissus are good, tulips are bad.

The bears come looking for water, so make sure you don't have a dripping faucet in the yard.

Good luck,

Rufus

I to have to echo HenMama2, black bears have killed people, a hungry black bear can be very dangerous, even more so with young to feed. Glad your chicken are okay, but more so that your okay...! That bear will likey be back, now that it knows where the food is. Perhaps some electric fencing around your coop is in order, bait the wire so the returning bear gets a good zap on its tender nose.
Everyone should have a healthy respect for a wild bear, meaning keeping a safe distance and i know i'd pick up a gun before the camera. A angry, hungry, charging bear can be next on the agenda..please be careful..!

Yikes! We get black bear around here from time to time as well - they've torn apart some bee hives we had and gotten into a grill that was cooling off one evening in broad day light, but they run the second they hear us.... so far.

I'm with the others - opt for the gun next time. Hopefully you wouldn't have to shoot it, but investigating a noise with a camera might not be the best choice. If it comes to you or the bear - well, you won't want to hope the camera flash does him in!

Here's our visitor - we never leave the grill out at night, but we had just finished grilling steaks when I guess the smell was more than he could bear (pardon the pun)

Here he is when we first noticed him - by the compost pile. He didn't find much of interest there. I was inside and the pics are taken through the screen of the window. He looked right at me. Don't know if he actually saw me or was looking the direction of the noise of my camera

Then he headed for the grill

My husband opened the door and he took off

My husband had a gun - I had the camera - and I was inside the house when I took those pictures!

Be careful! Electric fences are probably a very good idea.

Wow! too close for comfort!

Glad you're ok, and the chickens too. I'm surprised the bear left without getting a bird or two actually.

Fav, I know where you can get a good amount of used electric fencing, for just a small donation. Let me know if you're interested. The owner of a farm recently died and the family is now cleaning out a lot of extra stuff.
