Man it really did some damage to your coop. At least all of your chickens were ok.
MAssachusettes has laws against gun use, depending on where you live, if you are in a town setting its a no no. far out in the woods well ify.
It isnt bear season, Matt keep the pictures and try to get a picture of the bear when it comes back, catchit in the act of tearing the coop apart, gives you a better leg to stand on when the cops show up for firing a gun.

I had a bear issue a few years back. I know it's still around, but it seems to have lost interest since I don't keep food in the coop or run anymore.
That's what they're mostly interested in.
I lost chickens to the bear, but it was kind of accidental. They freaked, he swatted, they died. Right at dusk too. Had a long talk with the game warden and there are easier ways of dealing with it than shooting.
I could have technically shot him, but the paperwork afterwork would have been a nightmare. And think of the hole if you go the SSS route!!! Keep the food away from your coop. Collect eggs before you go to be, and you'll probably be okay in the future.
As for bear/human interactions. Unless they can't, 9 times out of 10 they'll run. It'd surely suck that one time, though, wouldn't it.

you have only one thing to do, kill the bear. If you don't it will kill all your chickens. DO NOT think you are safe in your house. The bear will take the door off as easy as you open a box of ceral.

Yes, hot wire! But on house current. The pulse current from batteries/solar is pretty freakin' useless against a bear.
