I'm the guy from the "Weird behavior in baby chicks" thread (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/778461/weird-behavior-in-baby-chicks). The 2 chicks that I showed you died today. At least I know that I tried everything. Anyway today I noticed that one of the other chicks started to have hoarse chirps. It sounds worse and worse. It's not even sounding like a chicken anymore.. more like a crow with a cold. Other than that she acts completely normal. She still is a very loud chick squeaking all day long. I found her a few times exploring the outside of the box. She also took her time to poop inside my shoes. It might be nothing but I'm starting to become paranoid after losing 5 out of 18 chicks.

Perhaps you can contact the breeder and see if they can do something about your loss. Also, you might want to separate the sick one from the rest in case it's contagious.

I checked your previous topic and noted that your chicks are approaching 5 weeks of age... am I correct?

Is it a possibility that this one chick is just hitting "puberty" and is in the process of switching from cheeps to clucks?

This was put in at week 7, but maybe she's starting early?

I was thinking the same thing. One of my chicks started a "sickly sounding attempt at a crow/cluck" at around the same age (5 weeks) and she is perfectly fine.
