Yet another reason I LOVE my rooster

I love my boys, too, and can't imagine not having them as part of my flock. They are truly amazing birds. If you think about it, it's even more amazing that they do what they do since they have a brain the size of a pea!! LOL

Our special rooster died this december. Now we are glad that we have two of his offspring and one other pretty rooster. We have to house them all in seperate pens, but let them out for a little bit once a week or so. We intend to keep the one that behaves the best. Right now we're still waiting to see which one it'll be.
We do miss our special little frizzle rooster, he was mellow with the girls, watched over them and helped with the babies.

I would give anything to know what animals are saying to eachother sometimes. They were probably fighting over him

Oh, I miss my sweet rooster

He was such a good protector.

I agree many folks don't realize the importance of a good roo. They offer leadership and protection to the flock.... many times giving their own lives so the hens can escape danger.

I love the pics of your brahmas by the way. I have a dark brahma cockerel I have my hopes set on to become the Alpha some day. So far he might be too gentle..... time will tell.

I agree with you totally, Rooster-red.

The hens may provide the eggs, but to me, the rooster has the most personality.

An added plus is if the rooster tolerates or even welcomes humans around his flock. I love laid-back roosters who lead the rest of the flock in coming up for treats.

I have three different pens set up in my coop and the largest pen has my free ranging layer flock in it. You have to go through that one to get to the other two. I have a black orp rooster and a welsummer cockerel in the layer pen. The other day I was watering and a hen from the BO pen slipped into the layer pen. The Welsummer cockerel attacked her until she went back. He perceived her as a threat and took care of it.

I also have had random cats walk by my place when I've had 3 big Orp roosters in the yard free ranging. They would call the girls to where they were and stand there sounding the alarm the whole time until the cat left.

I love my roosters.

I love my rooster. He is one of the calmest laid back roosters I have ever seen. He is even protective of cockerels if they get introduced in the flock. He does run them off if they try any funny business with his hens though. I sometimes worry that he may be too laid back. I do not know if he would know how to handle a predator attack. I hope I never have to find out.
