That is what we refer to as beak tipping. Just removing the sharp tip of the upper beak. I have 2500 hens that look like that. It is done when they are a few days old.

In the past, "debeaked" birds had a third to half of the upper removed. It's probably still done by some producers, but it isn't as common as it used to be.

Well now that the leg choppin off thing is over--- we gonna start in on debeakin?

what is wrong with asking a few questions about this topic??? someone brought it up and I was interested. the whole purpose of this site is to learn. so yes we moved on to debeaking, and I am glad Rodrigues informed me on what it is. It doesn't mean I am goign to go out and get my chickens done, but I now know what it is and I understand it. So thanks to everyone who has taken the time to educate me on a few things. :) On to the next topic.

Oh never mind.

I knew when I replied to this thread yesterday using simple uneducated logic, rather than shouting drama from the roof tops it was going to end up here.

Over and out!

Carry on, as you were.

In most properly run facilities, beak "tipping" is now seen as debeaking. It does the job without the mess or issues with feeding. I'm certain that animal welfare as well as better equipment helped bring about the new practices on debeaking. I've been in houses that have birds with their full beak and houses without. The birds that were debeaked had beaks exactly like the bird in the photos. Heck, I've done the same to several of my birds if they decide picking out leg feathers is a good idea. The beak eventually grows back, but it takes a while. By the time it does, the birds don't bother picking!
