So, I just found out a few hours ago that I'm to be a new mom to a few Orpington chicks being hatched for me. In about three weeks. I am relatively clueless. I mentioned to a chicken-keeping friend that I really enjoyed one of the chickens I recently 'sat' for, and boom! She told me she had acquired a dozen hatching eggs which she'll be incubating. Oy.
I am just lucky she wasn't aware exactly how much I loved the Dwarf Nigerian Goats I was watching!
In all seriousness, I have thought about chickens for a few years. But I am not sure I'd ever have taken the plunge if I hadn't been a wee bit pushed by this friend.
We are rural. Have only six acres. My husband is very skilled and will likely be making our coop, unless I find a suitable one on Craigslist or FB. The friend hatching them has had a large flock for a few years. I expect between her and the owner of the happy chickens I took care of last week, we will survive.
My biggest challenge is that I like to do things "right". So I read, and research, and study, and....that's why I figured I'd never get around to actually getting the chickens.
I admit, I am getting stoked about raising the babies. I also have to train my pooches not to chase them. I'll be bringing Millie my "pocket" Rottie over to the chicken friend's - who is also a very talented dog trainer, thankfully - to practice good chicken manners.
So that's where I'm at. Thank you for your hard work moderating and maintaining this site. I'm pretty sure I'll be living here for the next few weeks.
