Hey all,
Just wanted to celebrate. We finally got our first duck egg from one of my Swedish/Pekin mixes (see avatar). I have two black hens and one silver/blue/gray hen, and one silver/blue/gray drake. They were approx. four months old in the middle of April, when I got them. Now, it's July so I am guessing them to be approx. 6 1/2 months old or so.
My son was scooping water out of the pool for me, so we could empty it and change the water and he found the egg IN the pool!!! Of course, we couldn't see it prior to that cause the water was so yucky. They mess up that pool water really fast.
Anyway, now that one is laying, I expect the other two to start soon too. I will be adding a next box tomorrow and hopefully they will lay there. I already have two large dog crates, the plastic airline types, in the pen, with a piece of plywood across that to make a shelter for them. It makes a nice cubby, plus the two crates. I figured maybe they would lay between the crates or in one of them, but no go so far. We'll have to see what happens. They will probably just end up laying wherever, but at least the pen isn't so big that I won't be able to find them. Unless they keep doing it in the pool!! LOL
So, here's a pic. The quarter is just for size. They have been on layer feed for about two months now, so the egg was nice and firm. I put it in the fridge, but I don't think I will eat it, as it was in the pool, for possibly a few days. And, the water was not very clean, thanks to the poo, mud, algae, etc. Yuck!
I can't believe how exciting it is to get the first egg! LOL LOL
