YO GEORGIANS! :)

Quote: She plans it that way so the business gets handled and everyone goes away. If I were there, we would sit around and talk all day and have a good time. I would even let you play with my chicks. Did GAM let you play with any of the chicks?

Quote: Still haven't heard anything. BUT I just signed up for the text updates for each time they're scanned. At least now I don't have to keep checking back at the USPS website.

I have the dream to one day build a large scale natural self sustaining environment for chickens (and other farm animals) so I wouldn't have to worry about preditors but not have to sacrifice there freedom. Then to use manure and compost for a large garden. Also I would love to incorporate a breeding program into it to stay true to seperate breeds. I would also love to go around and build coops and setups for people to have there own Backyard flocks of all different varietys to meet there needs. But I'm still young so I don't think its out of reach. I'm glad to have you all here on BYC, as my parents don't take as much interest in the chickens as I do, and my freinds would probly think I'm weird for being into it. As a little kid I grew up in a kinda rural enviroment with people that had small home flocks. Then moved to the city with my dad and live with him and grew up in the city life. There's just something to the self sustaining life that is beautiful to me. But I guess I'm not the average young city guy. Lol
I feel the same way. I grew up in the woods, moved to a city. My DH and I hated all the concrete and people and traffic. Finally found our 25 acres out in the middle of nowhere. Mountains and lakes and lots and lots of trees! This property is ME! My spirit soars when I walk thru the woods! Love it!

So no comments on the psychotic number of chickens I have or the number I'm setting? Lame guys.
Probably because you still don't beat my 80 "keepers"

You have a lot now, but you probably don't plan to end up with 80. And that's just chickens.

Geese and Turkeys are still yet to be counted.

Why come don't you have clickables?

Our chicken math started with GAM. I finally broke down and told her she could have chickens in the back yard. So it started with 6 or 8. Then it started multiplying from there. Then we moved them to the farm. Then it kept multiplying and adding at the same time. We have around 85 or 90 chickens/chicks right now. About 15 ducks. 1 turkey. And another 100 or so eggs incubating (ducks, chickens, geese) AND I still have orders in for about 30 more eggs for turkeys and geese. And I should be getting my 2 Cotton Patch goslings in the next couple of weeks. The math saying "My Dear Aunt Sally" needs to start seeing some Dear Sally or we're going to be over run.
What on earth are you going to do with all these chickens/ducks/etc? Are you going to breed them to sell? Are you going into a farming business or is it just to look at them all? Are you going to be selling hatching eggs? What's your plan?

McMurray has absolutely NO chicks available to be ordered this week. Either you have to buy older chickens (started pullets, for example) or a completely different type of fowl altogether. They've sold out of all chicks, lol!

Well, as CD puts it, they're not all "keepers". I buy multiples of the breeds I want and as they get old enough, I will pick my boy and 3 or 4 girls to keep. Then I will trade them or sell them or give them away. (depending on breed and numbers) I will do the same with the ducks, turkeys and geese. A few will be processed, eggs will be donated for hatching projects or eaten for breakfast. But mostly my keepers will just be pets.

Geese and Turkeys are still yet to be counted.

Here's the plan: 30ish in the mutant pen (give or take a few during processing and hatching), 20ish (each) for the dorking and am pens. 15-20 in the Silkie pen, 10-15 in the BLRW pen, 15 +/- cayugas, 15 +/- CPG, 15 +/- Narris, 15 +/- RPs. Later on I'll probably get out of BLRW and AMs and get Croad Langshans and Dominiques.

My parents wanted 3 hens so last year the day before Easter I picked 3 up after work and snuck them in later when my babie bro wasn't around and we had them there the next mornin when he awoke. The next week I stopped back by the local feed and seed to just check out what they still had. Ended up picking up 2 more that were just so darn cute. (And not something I a had sen before, EE and Welsumer) then I was hooked. So I started looking into different breeds after tryin to figure out on here what I already had, and loved the lacing look. So I was talking with some other local fellow chicken lovers and ended up with a BLRW breeding pair that they had picked up for me at auction. So then I wanted to go with them to the auction to jusy check things out, ended up coming home with what was supposed to be a blue silkie hen. NOW I have some of my muts In my homade incubator

Ok, my chicken obsession started like this. My family had some friends over for dinner one night. The son who is a few years older than me raises chickens, he has like 50. They brought us some eggs. The next day, we ate some for breakfast, and the eggs tasted and looked so much better. I decided I wanted chickens. My parents said 5 or 6. We went to TC Country and got 3 and then went to Sacketts and got three. Well about 2-3 weeks later, I wanted more. So my mom and I convinced my dad to let me order 4 more, well 4 turned into 8. Sadly one died the next day and another drowned a few days later in the waterer. That made 12. We had them for about 2 years. We then moved so I gave them to some family friends. Well me moved again (current house) and this voice inside my head was saying chickens chickens chickens chickens chickens chickens chickens all day and all night. I convinced my parents yet again to let me get chickens. So off we went to Ruckers and I got 4 girls, 2 Araucanas(EE), a barred rock and a RIR. Now that voice inside my head is saying get more chickens get ducks get more chickens get ducks get more chickens get ducks, but this time my parents said not until we move to our 30 acres. I NEED MORE CHICKENS!!!!!

Well, I say good for you. I spent my childhood is the mountains, but my adolescence in the city. Now my young adult years have been in the country. I've got chickens, fruit trees, and a nice garden that provides fresh veggies in spring, summer, and fall. I can fruit, and some veggies, but freeze the rest. My dad is a fisherman and a deer hunter, so we process our own meat, except for ground and cubed-that we take to a local processor.

I make jam, and bread from scratch. I love to knit and crochet. I don't know anyone my own age who is into this kind of lifestyle.

I wouldn't trade this life for anything.

That's why I love this site. It's refreshing to talk with others in my home state, of all ages, who love chickens. Plus lots of folks on here live off the land as much as possible. BYC is my kind of peoples

You do all the things that I don't know how to do, but would love to! I have spent most of my childhood in the mountains and can't wait to live a little farther north. I also have chickens and 3 fruit trees that are pretty much useless. I love to garden though my current one isn't very big and I'm afraid to can. Our garden is pretty small so we don't have much to freeze or can anyway. There is no way you could get me to process my own meat though, no sir'ee. I make pickles and pasta if that counts. Don't know how to knit or crotchet but I'm learning to sew. I don't know anyone even close to my age that likes doing anything I like to do either. BYC people are definitely my kind of people though!

I have a question, do your fruit trees actually bear any fruit?

The last time I went into the TS, the manager found me watching the chickens and he came over and asked me if my husband knew I was there!! What is that all about! hahahha! My DH has apparently told every TS manager that they were NOT to sell me any more chicks! LOL! You have to understand my DH. He is a big 'cut up' and is actually very funny and likeable.
HAHAHAHAHA

In the incubator: 3 doz silkies (1 doz is @Missyktsm ), 16 turkey eggs, 19 BBS English Orps, 1 bresse egg.
Going in the bator tomorrow: 2 doz black AMs, 1 doz Dorking and whatever else I can cram in.
WOW!!!

They have LF silkies overseas. They are not as cute. Google them.
They look like their bodies are to big for their heads!
