YO GEORGIANS! :)

My phone is making me sound illiterate. It updated the keyboard again and now it eats whole words instead of just auto correcting them.

Oh I am so mad at myself for sleeping in today......I NEVER DO THAT! So, I get up around 7:45 and take my time around the kitchen, eating breakfast, etc. because there is nowhere I have to go and nothing pressing for the day, right? Then I go out to the coop to feed the girls and look in on my broody hens. 2 Duck eggs under one were not due until tomorrow or Thursday. I had planned to move mom and the eggs today. Ugh, the eggs had hatched! One duck was sticking out from under mom, so I looked and did not see it move. So I took it....was cold and limp and looked like another hen may have pecked at its nose. It died! The other duck was freezing and not moving much, so I took it and put it in the brooder. Here is my lone Runner Duck! So cute! But, if I hadn't have slept in, I think the other duck may have been ok and I would have moved them! Two more duck eggs under my other broody hen not due for another 20 days!

Anybody know enough about runner ducks to guess at the sex by bill/coloring?

MrsZ... I went back and re-read my last email about the Anconas. It says they will have more ducks later this month...doesn't specify how much latet. I asked them for a dozen. I will let you know what they say.

No problem, I'm patient :)

Horrible little bator and some user error on my part and we are down from 10 eggs to 5 eggs and I am fairly sure one of those 5 have stopped so really 4 eggs. I knew we wouldn't get more than 2 chicks, but at this point I will be shocked if we get even 2! Kids are oing to be so sad if none hatch!
I just saw this post. Sorry about your eggs. I hope the rest of your eggs hatch just fine.

So I looked back thru when I hatched my first RDs and was told by a Runner duck 'expert' that the females are usually really orangy yellow and the males more of a washed out orangy yellow. If that is true, then this duck is a female. I will name her Gabby! For those of you who don't know Runner ducks, the females are very very vocal. So, an appropriate name, right?

Good morning everyone! So sorry about your little duck Flowbh...I know that must just make you sick. At least you were babel to save the second one though.

I totally get the "horrible little bator" thing Book. I set almost 50 eggs this time and only 18 went into lockdown Sunday. So sick of loosing eggs because of temp drops and spikes! On the plus side though, I woke up to a pip this morning! Hatch day isn't technically until tomorrow but the bator temps have been all over the place so there's no telling when these things will hatch. I still have 11 Sizzle eggs, 2 porcelain Silkies, 4 partridge LF Cochins, and 1 of my LF Cochins. I'll be very happy if I get 10 chicks out of this hatch.

TSC sells mutts though?
Our TSC got their chicks from Mt. Healthy and so did the one in Athens. I actually talked to someone at the hatchery. If you look up Speckled Sussex on their site the picture of the adult birds is what our chicks are starting to look like. My roo that is now crowing at 7 weeks old, feather coloring looks just like the roo in the picture. I figure his comb and waddles as well as tail feathers will keep growing to look similar to the rooster in the picture.
