Still have a broody girl if anyone wants to hatch out some eggs.....

How is everyone doing??

@ChickenDancer How is Miss Lola doing????

Lola is doing great. Although I'm working all this week, so I haven't seen much of her myself. But those red feathers on her "shoulders" are really coming in now!

In other news, it looks like my "free exotic chick" is either a cuckoo maran or a barred rock. They all have SINGLE combs, clean legs, and the white "barred gene" spot on their heads. And considering I ordered cuckoo marans and barred rocks, that's not very "exotic" to me at all.

And my credit isn't going to go towards very much. They've sold out of darn near everything the week they are sending my bantams, too. AND they have completely wiped most bantam breeds off of their "availability" list, because of the trouble they are having with those eggs.

The only time I use grit is if the chickens have to stay cooped up for a long time and don't have access to dirt. Grit is basically rocks ground down to, well, grit size. Kind of like dirt! Chickens need grit to grind up their food in their bodies since they have no teeth. (It is an internal thing). Grit is not the same thing as oyster shell. Oyster shell (calcium) helps your chickens produce stronger egg shells. I offer my chickens oyster shell in a separate feeder. They eat it when they want. I do have one chicken who loves it so much, when she lays her eggs, they have lumps of excess calcium on them! I just use my fingernail to scrape it off the egg.
