YO GEORGIANS! :)

Just 'test' candled a few of the eggs in my bator. They have only been in there for 5 days, but I wanted to see if I could tell if they were fertile. I can definitely tell, so I will candle them all tonight. I had stuffed 54 eggs in a 40 egg bator, so I will take the non fertile ones out and rearrange the eggs. I was sorry to see that none of my Polish were fertile! Boo! I have nothing new to report on my broody. Haven't been down since this morning.

Don't toss any yet! I used to do that too but this year I've given some time and seen veining at 10 days that I couldn't see before.

Or at least, if you don't feel 200% sure hold off. :)

Sooo.. Three out so far. %4 should be along in minutes.

I may or may not have helped side pipper out through the vent holes. It's a big chick!!! And doing just fine. :)

Ugh.. Was just in the Brahma pen and grabbed up my Big Boy.. One, I realized his freaking talons are like 8" long. (Okay, so they're really more like 9" :gig jk)

I HATE messing with talons and usually try to leave them alone but these dang things are lethal. Not that he'd ever actually USE them.. Wiener.

Second, OMG for him AND the girls. The feathers. The fluff. I've been reading on this lately but duuh, never made the connection with my own birds. NO WONDER I've gotten all these infertile eggs from them!! Looks like when I trim talons I'll also be giving the whole gang a Brazilian. Not fully of course, but between the infertile eggs, the lice I can see and the poo on one hen, it's got to be at least partially done and quick.

This should all be fun! Better still, I just know hubby will be so excited to hold them all for me while I whittle away at them.

Just candled the 54 eggs crammed into my 40 egg bator. I am recycling 18 of them....They were not fertile. Will feed them back to the other chickens. There were 4 more that were iffy. I can look at those infertile eggs and know exactly who my roo is NOT banging! LOL! But, the nice thing is I have 4 fertile eggs in there from my Swedish Flower Hen, so if they hatch, they will be purebred chicks. They are kind-of rare and so much fun to watch feather out. They are one of those breeds that can be different colors! So, as of now, there are 36 eggs left but will probably be tossing those other 4 next week. Nothing new on Mamma. Of course, I still haven't seen under her!

LOL! This post cracked me up! How are rooster talons trimmed? I've never had a rooster and can't (live in a neighborhood), but I can't pass up an opportunity to learn :)
Well. I've been watching videos to see if there's anything aside from the obvious. I have died laughing at some of these CHICKEN FOLK!!

This stuff is hysterical. I'd post a couple here but I'm afraid they're BYC members! Baahahahaa!! Anyway, you can either clip the spurs like you would a dogs nail (which was my assumption and all I've done in the past).. OR you can grasp the base with pliers and "gently twist" until it cracks.. Then pull off the outer covering. Which I don't think I'd like because what's underneath isn't much shorter and still looks like it's be super sharp once it hardens. Anyone have their own preference here?
