Our SF got taken by a hawk also! Got a second one and it had small eggs. She was very friendly and loud! My DH really liked her. Then one day, the other hens jumped her and beat her up. She seemed to lose interest in living and died shortly afterwards. I liked them as a breed, but wasn't impressed with the eggs.

You need to check at your local feed store. Shouldn't have to pay more than $19-20 for 50 lb bag. One pound of seed will produce 6-8 pounds of fodder feed. The BOSS should be there, too. You want to make sure it is for poultry and hasn't been treated. You may want to run over to the fodder thread for more info and be sure to google fodder systems on you tube. Lots of good ideas for homemade systems.

The seeds are not grown in soil, just water. The chickens should be fed the fodder at about 6-7 days. The seed is still visible and the chickens eat all of it, roots, seed and greenery. The folder is very nutritious. If you let it grow to the point the seed disappears,

Woke up to babies!! First one was out when I got up at 4:30.. Up again at 7 and got to watch the second two. Two more to go.
 
Flower I think I'd like to try some fodder. But you're gonna have to make us a "fodder for dummies" post. Wouldn't be fair if Robo couldn't play along too. ;)

But really though, I haven't paid attention when you've told us stuff before because mine always free ranged. Now they don't get out near as much. Especially in winter!

Do you just put the seed in the bottom of a shallow pan and keep water in the pan or water them a little each day?
