YO GEORGIANS! :)

Since I'm pretty new to being serious about chickensi was wondering if yall could answer something for me. Why is it better to not was a egg if u don't have to. On google it said unwashed eggs last a lot longer than washed eggs. And don't wash them unless they are soiled. Why is this? I have always washed them then put yhem in the fridge. But it said to leave them out up to 2 Wks.

because the chicken puts a 'bloom' on the egg that seals out any bacteria. Also, if you wash an egg you have to be careful that the water isn't too warm because that would open the pores in the shell and actually draw bacteria in.

I don't wash my eggs at all unless they are extremely poopy, then I just use a damp rag to wipe off the poopy spots

one of my customers won't take them if I've washed them, she'd rather see a little dirty spot than absolutely clean eggs

@katiedarling - yeah this guy started at my lower back, down across the cheek, down the outside of the leg, across the top of my foot, then back up the inside working his way back around to the back. Literally raising my leg off the table every time. The nerve damage in that leg is so bad he said he'd never seen one he had to hit with that much juice....

Good answer.. Some I got from ebay, I had to wash. Some people say it is ok but never run them under the faucet submerge them in water. As PapaChaz said, "use a damp rag if they have any poop on them."

On the other note, I have pinched my Sciatic nerve while moving one of my chicken tractors. I am not sure what that is but I can tell you, it is painful. The stuff yall have mentioned today sounds like torture!

Also wanted to mention to PapaChaz, I know you have Blue Ameraucanas. Have you ever seen one with a clean face, no muffs or beard? The one I got from Mypetchicken.com is a perfect rooster but is clean faced other than some peach fuzz on his face you can barely see. The promised it would not carry in his genes and all of his offspring would have muffs and beards.

here's a link to a good byc article on how to clean & store eggs: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/cleaning-and-storing-fresh-eggs

I just buff mine with a paper towel. Unless it's got a turd on it. Then I wash it with warm water store it in the fridge. Cold water will cause the membrane inside to shrink, causing a vacuum inside the egg, drawing any bacteria on the shell's surface into the egg. I have kept mine on the counter for close to 2 weeks with no problems. Outside of that, I do the float test. if it's good, I just hard boil them & use them that way.

@PapaChaz oh hell no! I would hate that doctor. Glad mine lasted about 15 minutes.

i wouldn't submerge them at all!

the sciatic nerve is the one I have all the damage done to it. it's the one that goes from your lower back down the leg.

as for that americauna with no beard or muff, I'd sure question that and I wouldn't take a chance breeding that one if you're wanting purebreds. here's a link to the ABC page on them, says they "MUST have a pea comb and be bearded and muffed and tails. No tufts" If someone sold me a non bearded bird, I'd be showing that to them and explaining without a beard, it's not recognized. The beard gene is passed on even in cross breeds. All the chicks I got from breeding my rooster with leghorns and australorps have beards.....so it's up to you what to try to do with it.

Does he have a license? And you need to know, you must wash eggs you are going to sell. (I have a customer who wants unwashed eggs like PApa does. She is my one exception. All others, I wash.)
