YO GEORGIANS! :)

You know... Instead of putting a lamp at each end of my brooder (I have GOT to separate the LF chicks from my MFD, the size diff is too great now), I could just move the one to the middle and separate them with a piece of leftover hardware cloth..

Heat Lamps: I've used one from the start. I have always been very cautious with them and have seen the horrible nightmares of fires and loss when problems come up. I also have the Brinsea chick heater. I love the area range you get from heat lamps with the ability to see all of the chicks and how they are doing. The other day was my first close call with my heat lamp. I checked it the bulb was secure (no I did not over tighten) and set it up in my big brooder pen with all of the shavings. God was watching over his little fool because while I was setting up the feed trough the HOT bulb fell out of its metal collar and into the shavings with an added red ember hitting to. Thankfully I was there and scooped it out of the bedding and put my Girl Scout fire safety training in to action and then unplugged it all. I kept going back to check everything to make sure that I did not miss anything, a pretty big scare sad as now I worry about setting a new one back up or getting a second Brinsea unit.

Does anyone know if Walmart keeps brooder-type lamps in stock? I see online they carry an "actual" brooder lamp (doesn't say if in store) and then a utility lamp with lower reviews. Just curious before I get dressed and actually move away from the bed..

I passed TSC about five times uesterday between going to work and visiting family.. Kept putting off getting a lamp there. And now, here I sit.. Lampless and confused.
Yes ... Your Wal-Mart has them.

My turkey jumped onto the lip of the brooder last week, knocked the heat lamp off the rail, the heat lamp fell into the brooder, the bulb broke away from the base and by the time i got to the brooder from raking leaves the shavings were scorched and starting to smoke...yea wish i had a better alternative sometimes.

I've always used lamps as well. They do make me worry but I just say a little prayer and go on with it. I don't have the money for other types of warmers big enough for the number of chicks I keep during season.
