YO GEORGIANS! :)

I know the feeling there I had mine get attacked inside the run didn't catch the dogs and the animal controll here don't give a crap about chickens they said they looked but they didn't even drive around looking for them I'm glad you were lucky to have most survive it's hell to come out and find 3/4 of your flock dead in the run and the only way a dog g could get very n was someone letting them in through the door a dog couldn't open it
yeah, I hate having to have killed the dog. I actually had one of the others in the sights and could have but didn't take the shot.

The bad thing about is that most dog owners don't give a crap about you and your birds they just stupid chickens they say it ticks me off I have dogs and cats they live with chickens and no problem. But that old saying is true that once they taste blood they will be back! So be careful and do what you must to protect your flock I'd bet everyone here would do the same!

I'll be bringing good ol' apple-wood smoked Georgia pulled pork, slaw, and buns for everyone who attends, so if you can make an opening in your schedule...

I am a second grade teacher in Cobb county. I would like to purchase fertilized duck eggs to help teach life cycles to my second grade class. I am trying to find a company locally that I can purchase them from. Does anyone know of anyone or anywhere that sells fertilized duck eggs for purchase? I used chicken eggs last year, and this year would like to use duck eggs this year. Thank you.

Gam and Robo well Gam does that hatches for classes.

today I opened my pallet coop and let the 9 chickens in there out to roam the yard a while. Nothing unusal there, I do occasionally let them out. The neighbors behind us across the road, have 4 dogs that are usually on a cable, so while I was out and doing some stuff outside, I noticed them running along my fence line, their focus clearly on the chickens roaming the yard. No one was at home, so there was no way to get them to gather the dogs back up again....

I yelled at the dogs once and they high tailed back across the road. Actually one of them stopped in the road and almost got hit by a car......I didn't pay any more attention to them, as they didn't seem to me to want to cross the road again.

I came back inside for a few minutes, and the lovely wife called out, "there's a chicken on the porch and a dog chasing it"...... so the dogs found the spot by the ditch they could get under. When I got outside, there were feathers everywhere, I could see a couple of chickens laying dead in the yard.....I had one of the pistols on my side, but I wasn't going to shoot toward the road. Two of the dogs ran back and crawled under, the last one turned toward me, bared it's teeth and growled, so I had no choice but to put it down.

now, having said that, I'd rather have whooped the owners butt instead of killing his dog for being a dog. These are the people we've helped with groceries, given food from the freezer, veggies from the garden, yes even eggs from the coop. yet they have collected 4 dogs to have to feed???? They're also the ones we had so much trouble with not staying out of our yard, which prompted the fence installation last summer....

I walked the yard, and found two of the 9 that weren't dead, but injured pretty badly. found 3 dead bodies, and no sign of any of the others other than the feathers everywhere. I called the county police, and by the time he got here, one of the neighbors was home, and already knew what happened because another neighbor who came out, told him. When the officer got there, the guy walked over to the fence. At this time, I thought I'd lost an AM/welsummer crossbreed, my last MFD Rooster, my RIR and Buff Orp that were the only two eggs that hatched from the egg swap at GAMs last year, and 4 purebred ameraucana pullets that were already being bred but not yet laying so they were close....so the guy starts in saying the dogs probably came around through the open gate (which I had to open for the police officers)....Officer Van Dyke then proceeded to tell the guy it wouldn't matter, even if there was no fence, I had the right to protect my yard and livestock from his dogs, and then turned and asked me if I wanted press charges and file a complaint to begin the process of him having to reimburse me for my chickens, (which he told the guy were worth anywhere from $20-$40 dollars each)...so the guy changed his tune. I told him no, I didn't expect them to be able to reimburse me, I didn't want them to have to pay a fine, that they can barely feed themselves, I just didn't want any trouble over killing his dog and I wanted the dead dog out of my yard....he was very agreeable, and took the dog with him as he left.

turns out Officer Van Dyke raises chickens, and rabbits. We talked quite a bit before he had to leave.

ok, a long post, but coming to an end.....sitting on the porch, and a blue ameraucana comes walking around the chicken coop......puzzled me to start with, then I realized I'd had one survive. I wasn't going to try to catch her, so I figured at dusk she'd be at the coop door wanting back in. I had the two injured cockerels back in the coop already.....so just before dark I go up there, and there are 5 chickens standing there, like 'why is the door shut'.... the RIR rooster, the buff orp and the other AM pullets! don't know where they were or how they got away, but I suspect they were up in the leyland cypress trees. The poor RIR rooster doesn't have any tail feathers left at all, but the rest of them looked fine. However, one of the 2 cockerels, the Welsummer/am mix was dead when I went back up there. Funny but those two don't have any real outward appearance of being injured other than a scrape and some missing feathers, it was almost as if they were just in shock from being traumatized.....

so no more letting any chickens out, fenced yard or not, until I get all the crawl through places fixed, oh, and reload

here's a pic of the RIR
If you would like to replace your chickens I have some you can have, I have the beautiful Buffs from Silver Hill and many others that are not mixes, and if you would like a roo I can do that too. I'm sorry you had to loose some birds like that. You need to ask the RIR is he had his feathers number just for an occasion like this, :) I have a tube of super glue if ya need it.

When I go to jail you can send me some bananas, lol

I had a complaint put against me cause I have one roo and 3 hens that like to cross the road to the other half of the property that belongs to the house we live in, and now I go to court, did you know you can't free range your chickens in your own yard, fenced or not according to AC we are not at this point talking about the ones across the road which I said I'd rehome cause they like going under the cedar trees, but any way I'll take written notes that I can take to court on the 20th, oh no I'm not paying any fine, I'm pleading not guilty so I have to go to trial. I know who made the complaint long stupid story that I'm friends with the sister and the other sister who complained doesn't even live close to me but is trying to cause problems between the good sister and I. And I thought my cornbread wasn't cooked

No I don't need to replace them, all the ones that were killed were roosters I was going to have to rehome anyway. but wait, what is this crap that you can't let chickens run free range in your own yard? according to AC, what or who is AC? I won't be letting mine out of the coops again unless and until I get the fence fixed so that the dogs can't come under the fence again if I can't be out there.

oh, our mutual egg customer? bought 6 dozen from me the other day, and he bragged on your place! just thought I'd let you know

Animal control in Floyd Co. Officer Cordal spelled wrong, I'm cited for chickens "running at large" they were in my yard, 3 were technically at large they were across the street but still on the property. Oh that makes me happy that he said nice things about my place. AC couldn't say anything about not being clean, food or water.

and, can you get the sister you are friends with, to go to court with you and confirm that the other one is just a drama queen trying to start trouble?
Oh I didn't think about that but she works and I know she would write a letter to the Judge see the sister lied and said the chickens caused 2 wrecks, and that is soooo not true, and that should be an easy check with the police since there will not be any reports.

well duh, I should have realized AC was animal control. so there is some ordinance in floyd county that says you can't let chickens run free in your own yard in the country? only in Georgia folks, only in georgia

well Gam has tried to help me find that but it is so vague the ordinance that I will more than likely make the judge PO'd cause I need to see it in writing and see I asked AC for it and he just got PO'd and didn't get it and I have just resolved myself to jail time cause I'm not paying a fine, I'm not wrong and I take care of my birds.

I'm sorry for your loss, and I feel bad for that poor RIR. It looks like he barely escaped with his life. As the old saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished." I don't blame you one bit for pulling the trigger on that dog.

Although my property backs up against woods that are filled with predators, my biggest concern has always been dog packs. Fortunately I have never had to take a shot at a dog, but I wouldn't think twice about it if I found a dog on my property attacking my chickens.

After this episode, I hope your neighbors do you a big favor and move.
