YO GEORGIANS! :)

Our coop is a prebuilt for now and is 4'x6' in some weird orange spray they put on the wood (the picture and description showed unfinished) - so was that ever a blinding surprise when we opened boxes to assemble. I wasn't sure whose ratio was best for figuring space for the chickens and if they meant coop or run or both. There seem to be quite a few different ones online.

Most quotes are for 1) Chickens who live just within a coop or 2) Chickens who get to free range for parts of a day or 3) chickens who get to go out in a run. So, one of my sources say this:

"Figuring coop space per chicken really depends on how big your chickens are and how often you allow them outside in a run or to free range. The more free ranging or confined ranging you allow, the smaller the coop needs to be. At night, chickens take up very little space in the coop (1 Sq. Foot). They perch on a bar and fall asleep. If your chickens are only using the house at night, then they may need a smaller square footage,.
I recommend at least 10 square feet per bird. If a bird is living in a coop with a run attached, it should have an absolute minimum of 10 sq ft, 5 sq ft inside and 5 sq ft outside. An attached chicken run should be as big as your space allows. The smaller the area, the more the chickens will suffer from pests and social struggles"

Sue, about the closest I could find Lavender Orps for you was in Saluda, SC which is about an hour away from your location. The good news is that the breeder is anxious to sell because a new hatch in on the way, so you can probably pick up a good deal. Also, since the birds for sale are over a month out, you can pick out the pullets fairly easily. Anyway, below is the craigslist ad. Best of luck.

I haven't been on here much lately been busy moving my chicks, building coops and new broader boxes. Just wanted to show you my newest member of my flock no its not a chicken but finally started with my button quail

I'm alive it's been busy for sure I now have 2 coops and also building 3 bird cages for my quail. Then comes number 3 coop!! Lol didn't know that my easter clutch would grow so fast then my Dutch ie had another clutch hatch it's been a fun time here with birdspecies lol but I love it

What in the wild world of sports is going on?! @brucifer and I have been gone all day and there are no more posts?!

Thank you and Lisa for meeting me and surprising me with the Crele Orpington! She is beautiful, and to fit in with my Downton Abbey motif will be named Mrs. Patmore.
Side note: @ronnhill7 I believe that someone is in cahoots to get me in trouble with too many birds. Obviously my saying that I only had 15 was a challenge to the message board. Well, I now have "only" 17. :yesss:

I also expected 5 replacement eggs from my last batch I had purchased but got a dozen, so I'll be cramming my two incubators full and waiting to candle to check for fertility. For anyone on hatch watch, there are 11 solid white polish, 5 chocolate/cuckoo orpingtons, 3 isbars, and 4 jill rees cream legbars. This is two more than my Maxi and Mini will hold. I bought the mini on sale this past weekend from Brinsea to use for small runs and/or to be used as a rescue unit.

You just gotta laugh when you're driving down the highway with 3 kids, 2 birds and a dozen hatching eggs on the way to pick up your new incubator from the FedEx store. :lau

@livhatcher Sounds like an awesome car ride to me.

Hubby has the t-posts sunk and leveled. We are waiting in Amazon to deliver the hardware cloth. Even with prime, we have to wait until the 8th. I can't wait until the gals get in their new run. We will have enough to lay a perimeter in the ground and cover the top. Pesky hawks, raccoons, foxes and a random coyote every now and then.

I should have plenty of room to expand the flock next year :) May have to borrow someone's rooster for a little extra duty :lau
