Hahahaha you forget I’m using a simple 64 gallon plastic tote lol. I did make the babies feel special this week. Had to go to Walmart, lord I hate going to that place even during normal times. Seen the totes, walked around for a few getting what I needed, then ended up buying another tote. That evening my daughter and I cut a hole in the end of the totes and made a tunnel out of cardboard, so the babies now have twice the room to run and live in. Trust me they love running wide open from end to end, a few don’t stop fast enough and you hear a thud lol...Mine are on "DuMOR Chick Starter/Grower 20% Feed, 50 lb." from Tractor Supply. That's what I have always fed all my chicks up until 6 weeks. It's non-medicated.
We've thankfully never had a problem with health issues with my chickens. When it rains I do cover them with a tarp and/or put them in a shelter. My brooder set up is just like Tractor Supply:
A big giant tub with shavings and a waterer and feeder plus a heat lamp. It's never given me problems so I will continue using it until I'm in a different financial position to make fancier brooders with the heat plates I've been seeing.
Once they're 6 weeks I do let them roam in grass (sometimes sooner) then forever after that.
Welcome Tonya.Hi Y'all! So happy to find this forum! New Mom of 9 chicks that are 5 weeks!
Wow. I’ve been gone from this site for a while because nobody was posting. Glad to see it started back up! I live in North Ga and have about 64 adult chickens and about 26 chicks. My passion is colored eggs and fun and funky chickens! I also have ducks! Glad to know this thread is active again!View attachment 2118201View attachment 2118202View attachment 2118204View attachment 2118206
Welcome to the thread neighbor, I’m just around the corner from you in Heard county.Hello fellow Georgians, glad to have found this thread. I’m about an hour south of Atlanta between Columbus and Macon. My little backyard flock keeps growing. I currently have my first broody hens so I hope to have some backyard mixes with my Brahma rooster. This is the first year of 3 that any of my hens decided to sit. Both are still young so I hope they follow through. I am currently raising some straight run chicks from tractor supply for my mother in law to start her flock. I am pretty sure 11 out of 20 are boys. If anyone around me is interested in a rooster, let me know. I have 6-8 week old cockerels of the following breeds Salmon Faverolles, mottled Java, Easter Eggers, best guess is blue Australorp (one has incorrect comb), a bantam white crested blue polish, and possibly a white silkie (still looking to confirm it’s a boy). I also have what I believe is a pair of La Fleche with a crest. They are of course hatchery grade but I haven’t decided if I want to part with them yet.
