I'm in Calhoun, GA (NW GA) and a year into being a chicken owner. I started with 7 this time last year, and now I'm up to 30.....My family thinks I'm crazy, but they never say no to the eggs!!!

Looks like you did ok. Welcome.

First, I have no chicken experience at all. Zero. Loads of canine and equine experience but no poultry.

In fact, birds freak me out a little bit. I know, I know!  Now you understand my anxiety.

I want a small flock for laying only. I originally planned for 2 hens but I have friends and family members who are already begging for eggs so now I'm up to six.  I plan to pick chicks up at a local feed store. They are suppose to start getting chicks this weekend.  Buff Orpingtons, RIR, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock and Black Giants. I've decided on Buff Orpingtons. I would love to have some of the others because they're so pretty but I think the Buffs will be the best choice for me.  I need very calm, friendly, beginner chickens.  Baby steps!

We don't have a coop yet but we have a run-in shed originally built for some of our horses. My husband is going to convert 1/2 of it into a coop and we're going to fit an old dog kennel with some new more predator proof wire to use as a run.

And no worries on an incubation addiction. Right now I'm just hoping I can keep these little girls alive and none of them become one of my other critters supper! It's going to be a challenge!
Mmhm.. It starts with an empty lean-to.. Then you might build a separate coop.. Next thing ya know you're eyeballing your horse's stall.. "He could really survive with HALF that amount of eating room." LOL!!

Looks like you did it right to me!
We shall not name the number of chickens I currently have. Mostly because I lost count...
