Hey, in Canton GA here. Interested in starting my own coop. Is it possible to have a coop with only 2 chickens that would be sufficient to supply eggs for a family of 3-4? A hen and a rooster?

no, a hen, depending on the breed, will usually lay 3-6 eggs a week. Then if she stops laying, to molt, go broody, or just stops, then you wont have any eggs.
I would suggest 3 hens per 2 people, more or less depending on how many eggs you use. I bake alot, so I use alot of eggs.
 
ok... so I'm thinking 6 hens would be ideal then. I hadn't thought of the time they don't lay as well. Is 1 rooster enough for 6 hens?

I was reading that 3-6ft is required per chicken... is that right? Seems like that would require a very large coop for 6 hens. I have limited room to work in since this would be in my backyard. How much room do they need to move around etc? I am sure there are varying answers to this so I'm interested in maybe some opinions from people within the same regional area such as yourself.

tyork820, You can start with two hens, but, tee hee, you won't stop there! You will catch the chicken addiction and will quickly learn about chicken math!!!! You will start seeing all those different colored eggs and different breeds of chickens you just can't live without! And your chickens will go broody and you will just have to let them hatch babies! And you will love them all and want to keep them. Then, before you know it, you will have 50 chickens! hahhahaha! I started with 4 chicks, then promised my husband...."if I only had these 8 I would be happy"..... then it was, "Well, it is only one more" and then it was realizing I had 60 chickens/chicks in my yard. One weekend and Craig's List later, I am back down to 24. But, I am constantly looking for more....it is truly an addiction! Welcome to the world of chickens!
