Sorry to hear.

oOOhlala, Loganville!?

Hi there! Very sorry about your Silkie. Very sad.

Walton Or Gwinnett?

I haven't read back on these posts much, but I made gs cadet. But since I had boys not girls, did BSA for quie a while. We joke that BSA does not stand for Babysitters Of America, as many treated it.

Loganville just on the Gwinnett side and you?

I have a sad but necessary question. I have not been in the situation yet of having to put down a chick let alone one of my young flock. Always wanting to be prepared I'm asking what is the quickest most humane way of culling a chick & or older chicken?

I'd like to know what other people do. I had one young chick (just a few weeks old) that I had to put down. It had a genetic defect that couldn't be cured. It was very weak when I finally made the decision. I held it close to my body and sang a lullaby as I held it's beak closed and put my fingers over it's nostrils. It only took about 20 seconds. I cried the whole time. It never struggled or anything....just went to sleep. I hope I never have to do that again!

p.s. My DH offered to put it down for me, but when he asked me to get him a scissors, I did it myself!!!!! Ugh!

Hi from Walton county loganville

Yeah, it's tough. Even for mean roosters destined for soup, more so for little ones or the pets.

I have dh do it if it can wait. If not, it falls to me.

The method of humane dispatch varies. Food is killing cone and jugular slit with fresh exacto blade. Sick or injured, I try to nurse to the last breath, but snapping the neck gently for hopeless case (prolapse and infection). There are many discussions here on byc to learn from.
