I plead the fifth! Somewhere east of highway 81 and south of 78.

I watched a You tube where a 1st timer did the deed with a rooster for dinner that he could not keep in a neighborhood. He had his young sons helping to teach them where food really comes from and to show exactly how a novice does it mistakes and all for the first time. It was hard to watch as he sliced at the upside down rooster with legs tied together hanging from a Shepperd's hook. It took him 5 times before he got through the feathers. Okay I might give the poor thing a reprieve from the Governor at that point. I have had to do hard things in the past for an animals best interest, I honestly can say that it has been my last act after exhausting all other options. I don't like it and it hurts my heart, but it would be cruel to let the animal suffer instead. When it comes to the dinner aspect, I hope I can be as black and white as my farming Aunts & Uncles and understand they had good respected lives, while loved there may come a time to have them in for dinner.

Right now they are all my spoiled pets. I sit with them and we talk, now I can't really understand what they are saying...but non the less I recognize that they are saying something. I hope this continues for a good long time to come.

Ok, I confess. I've cried every single time my birds have died and I've pawned off the dirty deed to someone else. As far as the eating ones go, I segregate the individual the day before, and at the time of deed, I go la la la in the house and don't go back until all is cleaned up and I have a ziplock bag in the frig looking just as anonymous as store bought.

When my pet Silkie was killed by a hawk, I cried for an hour, buried her to the solemn silence of the flock, and took a pitcher of margaritas to my friends and we drank to her memory. My friend understands about pets.

On the internet I try to be a big tough person.

And I live quite the opposite direction from cca, ooh llama. OohLaLa. Stupid autocorrect

I recently culled a very aggressive rooster. I thought it would be hard for me to harvest it, but surprisingly, it wasn't. My dad lives with me, and usually he takes care of stuff like that, but I've had to help him dress deer before, so I was already quite prepared. The only part that bothered me was all the kicking after the head was removed. It was a little disarming and just plain weird.

However, now that I've experienced it from start to finish, I certainly plan to raise dual-purpose flocks going forward.

On another note, my second, much larger pen is being built right now! Dad and one of his construction friends is out there putting up the fence to go around the coop. Can't wait to see the finished product!! Hopefully it will be done today so I can pick up the new feathered inhabitants tomorrow!! :)

Looking fwd to seeing pics of your new coop. I've got polish in my incubator. If they hatch out around Friday I'll start a new coop just for them.
