Morning guys.

It was a looong night. Up at 1am to get the most urgent chick started on zipping.. Did a "can opener" shell removal, leaving the membrane as was and wrapped in a paper towel.

Woke up at 3am to that one hatching. So far so good, it's in the brooder with the first two that hatched on their own.

So now I have three more in the bator that I have zipped in the same way.. You guys know how, once a lot of the action is over with the self-hatchers, temp and humidity just seem to lag after that? So that's what I'm fighting now.

The three that I have zipped and wrapped, I have no reason as of now to think they won't make it. All are active and pi$$ed, so plenty of fight left.

One remaining chick had never internally pipped, so I opened the air cell and made a hole for its beak. That one is also wrapped but I did no zipping. Pretty sure that one will e a loss but I'm giving it time, at least until it gives up on its own.

Exactly. I'm thinking of swiping Mama Duck's eggs after this, just to get back into my comfort zone.

Starting tomorrow, the brahmas will be in the tractor permanently, or at least until they are big enough for the coop. Hopefully the SLWs will join them in the tractor in the next week or 2.

I've got my killing cone now, so I'll be retiring my youngest roo for the freezer soon. Once I know how many of my 30 chicks are girls, I'll be culling some of my current layers too, to make room for the newbies.
All the boy chicks will stay together until they are big enough for freezer camp.

Today is turkey hatch day fory one lonely Narragansett! Come on little one! I can hear "scratching" when I put the egg to my ear. How long should I wait to help?

Dad had a friend in construction, so that's how I got mine. Of course you can always find abandoned cones on the side of the road, usually wherever recent road construction has been.
