YO GEORGIANS! :)

Good morning everyone!! I know its early, but wanted to catch up on all the posts I have been missing.

WELCOME to all the new comers!!! This is a great thread with some wonderful people. Being a newbie myself, I would have gone crazy if it weren't for the awesome people here helping me through my chicken saga!!! Welcome to the flock, pull up a roost and a cup of coffee.

Despite what they say, Robo isn't that bad, he is really nice, but NEVER let your guard down with him.

Forgive me abmaddox1981, but I'm a newbie. That means you're about to have one of them hatch, correct?

When a chick hatches, you'll have two pips - internal and external. The internal can usually be seen by way of "shadows" above the line of the air cell. But if you hear them peeping, they definitely have made that internal pip to access the air in the air sac. They can't make noise without doing so, because they aren't breathing yet.

External pip is the one MOST people refer to when they say "I've got a pip". That's when you see a single crack in the shell. The chick only makes it to get fresh air, so that doesn't mean it's actually hatching yet.

Internal pip usually lasts for about 24 hours. External typically lasts for about 12. After that, they begin the "zip" phase, where they make a crack in the shell every few seconds until they have "unzipped" a line all the way around, and then push themselves out. It's a fast process - rarely lasting more than an hour - and the straight line around the shell looks almost like a zipper, thus the phrase "zip".

About an hour west of you. There are some things in Oxford on CL that I want. That's close to Covington isn't it? Or is closer to Conyers?

Closer to Covington, but both really. Covington and Conyers are side-by-side. Both of them are pretty much straight up Hwy 36 from me, and straight out 81 from McDonough. That means our chicken railroad MIGHT be able to continue up the east side, now...

If Blue Roo sticks around.

My Brahmas were doing fine but all of a sudden they started dying. I think it's 2 or 3 we've lost. And 2 of the SLW's up and died for no apparent reason. I thought they were golden by the time they were 4 or 5 weeks old and the random, sudden, unexplained deaths only occurred in the first week or two. Oh well... that's why I order extras.
We all must be having problems with light brahmas. Remember the six I bought from TSC and lost four very quickly? And they were in a brooder with other chicks, but it was ONLY the Brahmas that I lost. No other breeds.

And like @mrsdszoo , mine last two are growing weird. One is currently bigger than these cornish rocks, but the other one barely out-weighs a bantam chick that hatched this past weekend.

ok now im confused. so you don't exactly hear a peep, its just the action of them getting to the fresh air in the air sack?
No, you do. They actually make the noise. It's just that they can't do it without air in their lungs. So you won't hear it before they pip in to that air sac.
