My hubby built an incubator out of a small styrofoam cooler, we are still tweaking the temp and humidity. What percent humidity do you prefer? I've read a few different things.
 
PPS: I couldn't take the mess any more, and all of the oldest chicks were well -feathered out, so... they moved into the big coop. It is 4x8, and filled with a deep layer of fresh pine shavings to cuddle into, so they should be fine. They were super excited to have the extra room, and as expected, no one ventured out into the run. I figured the rain wouldn't matter much, since they'll likely take a few days to get brave enough to leave the coop. @GAMarans , General Pepper is in here; see him with the EE girls and one Sumatra guy?

Lynn, I have a home made plastic coolerbator that I like to keep around 30% humidity in until lockdown, then it gets bumped to between 50-60%. I find chicks drown too easy with higher humidity; the air cells stay too small. However, it's important to remember that each individual set up should be treated as such -individual. What works for me may not be the best for you. There's a good article here on BYC about "dry hatching"; it's got a lot of good hatching info in it, no matter which method you use.
 
I went to close up the girls and took one more look in the egg box.. Had a late layer, which makes a four-egg (out of four hens) day for me! :)

Lol. It doesn't take much for us, does it?
 
Ok, so to recap the weekend:

We met MrZoo and the Little Zookeeper on Saturday. Nice folks and the girl is adorable.

Today we drove to Cherry Log and bought more birds and eggs. We actually went there to get 3 Rhodebar pullets. That deal included a free cockerel. So that was 4 Rhodebars. Then he threw in an extra Rhodebar and Cream Legbar cockerel since they don't sell so well. And then we decided to go ahead and buy a dozen Rhodebar eggs because we like incubating AND there's always a chance of losing a chick. He threw in extras. 8 extras. Really nice folks!! And it was a nice drive up.

And since we were up that way, we went by Flowerbh's house. BEAUTIFUL place. And MRFlowerbh is a hoot. I laughed the whole time we were there. Picked up a few eggs while there, too. The funny part is MRFlowerbh ACTS like he doesn't like the chickens and wants to get rid of them BUT it's very clear he loves those chickens. When Flower came out the chickens were milling around minding their business and getting their chicken thang on. When HE walked out they came running and swarmed him. Never mind HE was the one that brought out the treats. LOL!! Anyway, it was definitely worth the drive up and I would love to go up when we have more time to hang out... and fish.

Who was it who had to do surgery on their chicken's crop? Did she survive?

Just got back from Tractor Supply with 300 ft of fencing! Going to try to contain the chickens to the back so I can grow flowers, grass, and bushes again!

Enjoyed meeting GAM and Roboduck today. Hope we weren't too weird for you!
