Quick update: In the ten minutes or so that I sat down, took a breather, and wrote that post, he has warmed up enough to make a bunch of noise when I picked him up. So I'm sure he'll be fine now. I'll give him a bunch of food in about another 20 minutes or so.
 
Well, we made it through some nasty rain, wind, and thunder at the house without too much drama. One of the dogs has bad storm anxiety, So we always wake up to him pacing, crying, and trying to get under places he can't actually fit, and that continues all through the storm. So that wasn't fun, but we lived through it. I usually give him a Benadryl before bed if we're expecting storms at night, but I forgot until he woke us up :/ . I had to get up and give him one during the storm, and it takes longer to make him drowsy that way. I'm about to head out to the farm to check on the rest of the gang. I'm hoping everyone else stays dry and out of trouble today!

Old reliable came out of the dishwasher last night, got reassembled and cranked back up. With absolutely NO adjustments, it went right back to a steady 102 degrees.

That being said, my turkey eggs are now set! Four weeks from today, I hope to have some little Royal Palm turkey poults running around.
 
Lucky you, Mrs D.. I wish that was all my girl did.. She also craps herself all night long, and this is a 75-pounder. We stayed at my grandmother's last night so I had one heck of a mess to clean when I got home (she stays in my bathroom at night).. I don't know how much more of her I can take. :/ :(

How did you get started with free ranging? We have our chickens in a small temp run/ coop. I would like for them to be able to hang out on the property during the day. Whenever I go to the coop and open the run they try and get out but they seem to hang out in the coop a lot. We do have hawks, so maybe that is why they hide?

We have a pretty big fenced back yard area. Should I start with letting them in there? Or just give them the whole 2.6 acres right away. And how do I get them to go back in at night? Or will they just know to go to the coop. I'm not looking forward to chasing them around trying to herd them back to the coop but I'm sure that's probably what will have to happen.

I also have a large backyard. I started them with the backyard first. It lets you see how they respond to the free ranging and it gets them accustomed to returning to the coop in the evening. I have 5 acres and the chickens never leave the acre the house sits on.
 
My husband is getting on my nerves! He keeps saying no to everything I want! Even free ducks!

I got started raising chickens again last year so my granddaughter could see the chicks hatching and raise them. I have to admit I enjoy it as much as she does. We also raise butterflies in the summer. She can't wait for the butterflies.
 
I have a question for the more experienced chicken owners. At what age would it be ok to leave our young chickens for a couple of days in their coop and run on their own? We wanted to go see our Mothers for Mother's Day out of state. We have hardware cloth on our coop and run and are making feeders/ waters that should last a few days. Our chicks will be about 12 weeks old by then.
