There are several different things going around this time of year. Infectious Bronchitis, infectious Coryza, and Mycoplasmas. These are all respiratory illnesses. Most cases are brought into your chickens by wild birds trying to eat your chicken food, or pooping in your chicken yard. Other cases are brought into your flock by carrier chickens introduced into a healthy flock. Other than putting your chickens in a closed up environment, there is little you can do about them catching some of this stuff. In most cases, the mortality rate is low. You may lose some of the weaker chicks/chickens, but I think you can buy some 'add to the water' medications to help your chickens. (Sulfadimethoxine is the safest to use) . Good luck with your chickens! I know we love them all and hate when they are sick. They are like children!
I know exactly what you mean. My mind isn't made up on what I'm going to do with them if they recover. The good news is that the only brahma actually showing signs of illness is the female. The boys all appear to be fine. Same thing with my Wyandottes - the female is sick, but not the boys. Go figure.Don't feel bad, I didn't think you were crazy either way. It's your choice what you want/don't in your food! Personally I don't know if I'd want to eat a previously sick animal, but that's not based on any intelligence, just my gut. LOL
. Yeah, chicken math is crazy! Congrats on your hatch...new babies are so much fun. It always makes sense if you have chicks in the brooder to add a few more while you're at it. I currently have 3 extras in my brooder that DH has not noticed at all.All four of my chicks hatched today! So far I don't see any problems with any of them, just healthy chicks. Then I thought well since I have the brooder out already and the farm supply has EE chicks I wanted, might as well get a few. Then I ended up getting a foster chick for carcar... Now I'm up to 9 in the brooder. Chicken math! AND I found a guy in my town with the BLRW chickens I want so bad! I just don't have $40 to spend on them after getting this other stuff together. Curse you budgets!
. You're very welcome. Hope it helped. Thanks for the info!![]()
Sorry I just got back I'm doing my frist dry hatch I've never tried this before but I read that it was the best way the humidity in my bater stays at about 35 with no water at all in it so that's why I was going with a dry hatch was this a good idea or not thanks
